(Apr. 22, 2002)------ Many of us have souvenirs and photos that will spark our Olympic memories for years to come.
It's often hard to decide what to keep and what to pitch.
Right now, the Utah Historical Society is collecting it all.
Governor Mike Leavitt today lit the torch for The Olympic Legacy Collection.
The collection of Olympic memorabilia and artifacts is off to a start with hundreds of photographs taken by college photojournalists... pins, banners, jackets, signs,
even an Olympic Star Barbie.
It will eventually include oral histories, photos, individual memories.
Governor Mike Leavitt: THE GAMES AFFECTED ALL OF US IN DIFFERENT WAYS. UNIQUE WAYS. WHETHER YOU WATCHED IN ON TV OR IN THE STANDS, EACH OF US WERE WITNESSES.
Memories that can be stirred by a flag, a banner, or a photograph of a victorious athlete.
Other memories were brought to us by commercial sponsors. They'll be part of the display too.
Governor Mike Leavitt: ALL OF US WERE LEFT WITH THESE UNIQUE MEMORIES, AND THEY'LL WARM OUR HEARTS FOR MANY YEARS. WE WANT NOT JUST TO REMEMBER THEM, WE WANT OUR CHILDREN AND GRANDCHILDREN TO SHARE IN THE EXCITEMENT WE CAME TO FEEL.
Jed Boal/Eyewitness News: THERE WILL BE A GRAND OPENING FOR THE COLLECTION IN ABOUT A YEAR. IN THE MEANTIME, THE HISTORICAL SOCIETY IS STILL LOOKING FOR UNIQUE ITEMS THAT YOU MAY BE ABLE TO DONATE TO THE COLLECTION.
Max Evans/Dir., State Div. of History: ANYTHING ELSE THAT REPRESENTS THE SPIRIT OF THE GAMES, THE LOOK AND FEEL OF THE GAMES, THE DRESS OF THE GAMES.
The Governor gave programs from the President's first-ever visit to the State Capitol the day of opening Ceremonies.
He also added a couple of pins and an Olympic lantern used in Opening Ceremonies.
From volunteers, spectators, sponsors and athletes-- the collection will include anything and everything of interest from the Games.
If you want to hang on to your collectables for a year or two and then donate them, you can always take them off the wall later.
