Nightclub For Athletes

A Salt Lake dance club may be the hottest night spot during the Olympics. Starting February 8th, it will be an exclusive club for athletes outside the Olympic Village. News Specialist Sandra Yi reports.

Tony Box/The Last Lap: "THE FACILITIES IN THE VILLAGE ARE FANTASTIC. WE WORK WITH THE ATHLETES UP THERE. BUT THE ATHLETES, WHEN THEY FINISH COMPETING, WANT TO GO OUT AND SEE WHAT THE HOST CITY HAS TO OFFER."

Club Axis is being transformed into The Last Lap, a temporary hospitality venue, which will be open for 17 days.

It was first launched in Sydney during the 2000 Games and was a big success.

There were more than 8,000 athlete visits and dozens of celebrity guests like Russell Crowe and supermodel Elle MacPherson.

Tony Box/The Last Lap: "IT WAS 7 OR 8 DAYS IN A ROW OF CELEBRATION, KIND OF LIKE 7 NEW YEAR'S DAYS IN A ROW. SO WE'RE LOOKING FORWARD TO IT HERE VERY MUCH."

Wednesday morning, crews were still working on one of two VIP rooms strictly for athletes and guests with VIP passes.

In here, there will be free food, live bands and a bar.

For the public, there's the Jungle Room for games and another room with a big dance floor.

A limited number of tickets will be available to the public so they can mingle with the athletes.

Stephen Justesen/Club Axis: "FROM THE VERY BEGINNING, I ALWAYS WANTED TO MAKE SURE THAT AXIS, FROM A LOCAL STANDPOINT, I WANTED TO TAKE CARE OF OUR REGULAR MEMBERS AND CUSTOMERS, THAT THEY ALLOWED ACCESS TO WHAT WE'RE DOING DURING THE GAMES."

Organizers say this will be a unique Olympic experience. They're sure The Last Lap' will be the first stop for athletes and visitors after dark.

You can get tickets to The Last Lap at Smith Tix. They go from $11 to $32. VIP passes are also available for $60.
