Torch Carries Olympic Spirit
Thousands of people have turned out to watch the Olympic flame go by as it's travelled the U.S. enroute to Utah. What do those spectators know about Utah?
|

(Dec. 29, 2001)------ Sammy Linebaugh followed the torch last week and asked some observers what they know about the Beehive State.
Think what you want-- it makes you stop and watch.
"HOW YOU DOIN' NEW HAVEN? SALT LAKE CITY!"
And that's exactly what this Coca-Cola caravan wants.
IT'S THE OLYMPIC TORCH RELAY. HERE WE GO!
Crowd building on this 65 day, 13,500 mile journey, these are the people in charge of hype -- passing out banners, posters, flags.

So when the flame arrives, there is a following.
By day, and by night.
"THAT'S CALLED A TORCH. AND IT HAD FIRE ON TOP OF IT."
"WHERE ARE THEY HEADED? WHERE ARE THEY GOING TO END UP EVENTUALLY? I GUESS IT MIGHT END UP IN MEXICO."
Salt Lake is a big part of this traveling train.
Ask people, and most know something about the 2002 Olympics host city.
THERE'S A LOT OF SNOW, THAT'S BASICALLY WHAT I KNOW.
I KNOW IT'S HOME OF THE MORMONS.
I THINK OF KARL MALONE, HIS HARD WORK ETHIC. I'M JUST A SPORTS GUY, THAT'S WHY.
I KNOW THE OLYMPICS ARE GOING TO BE THERE.
Welcome signs...city billboards.
In New York, the images are hard to miss, and so is the Olympic spirit.
Sammy Linebaugh/Eyewitness News: "HERE IN MANHATTAN THE OLYMPIC TORCH WINDING ITS WAY THROUGH CITY STREETS PEOPLE SAY MEANS MORE THAN IT WOULD HAVE BEFORE SEPTEMBER 11TH.
IT MEANS FREEDOM. THEY'RE NOT GONNA KNOCK US DOWN. THEY TRIED BUT WE'RE STILL GOING.
Still going...to a gathering of the world out West.
