Busy Days Ahead at SLC Airport
Sunday, 2/24/2002 @ 10:45 pm

The Salt Lake City International Airport will be exceptionally busy over the next few days. Tomorrow you can expect a four-hour delay in getting through check-in and security. Most check-in desks will open at 4am. Plan ahead so you don’t miss your flight.

Homeward bound Olympic spectators braved two-hour lines at the Salt Lake International Airport this afternoon as they tried to get out of town on the last day of the Winter Games and before the airport closed for security reasons.

Many travelers planned several hours to snake through lines for curbside bag checks, inside ticket handlers and finally the metal detector security areas.

Tomorrow, the airport is expected to swell with passengers, expanding beyond its capacity of 74,000 passengers a day.

Donald Gundersen, an airport employee directing foot traffic, said passenger numbers would dramatically increase the day after the closing ceremony.

Twenty-two charter planes leave Monday, some of them departing from a different airport hangar and not adding to the traffic load at the terminal used by most passengers.

By 5:30 p.m., the airport's terminals were nearly empty. Just as it did during the opening ceremony Feb. 8, the airport closed down as a security precaution to protect the closing ceremony from a hijacked plane.
